Boss Battles

May 9, 2008

The idea of a boss battle is a good idea, which is generally terribly implemented.

The most typical boss there ever was is summed up in this picture.  Since bosses are meant to be particularly strong, most of the time you are attacking a weak spot or  indirectly attacking it. In this particular battle you jump around a room while the big eye attacks you. There are, as I see it, at least three ways this could go down, all of which I would find kind of boring:

1. You hover around near the spikes to make it ram into you.

2.  You  hit the eye while it is open.

3. You have to, like, "extinguish" the eye's fieryness which then enables you to attack it.

The most classic kind of fight is purposely drawn out to give the player more time to get hurt. That's why you would make the boss fly around for 20 seconds and then have 5 seconds when it is vulnerable: option 2. The most obvious dowside to this is that a skilled player cannot speed through this part of the game. It is officially boring, because you are spending half the time avoiding and...

Ooh! A Game!

May 4, 2008

This is my first attempt at making a game with Game Maker 7 which so far seems like a great design tool.

Oh yeah! In each level there are three orbs to collect. Only three levels. Will improve, I promise. Complete it, you must!

Leave your opinions in the comments.

A Barrel Game

May 1, 2008

Barrel Game

This game concept is pretty simple. The person/player starts at the bottom of the barrel. They have arrows to move, and up to jump. The barrel is rolling slowly down a hill. (20 seconds is 1 rotation). Therefore, the entire level is rotating around the green goal at the center of the barrel. This entire game is about vertical ascent. In the sample level shown, you would have to just keep pace with the turn of the barrel. After 1/4 turn

This is the same level after 5 seconds, or a Quarter turn. note that now the flat terrain is the part of the level with the gaps in it. The player would be jumping over the gap right around now.

What happens if we make a more complex level?

expanding the game

The first level is something as simple as I have shown. Then we can add complexity. A timer is sort of like a number of lives: Say you have 60 seconds to complete a level, which is 3 full rotations. In a level like the one shown, you have 3 chances to complete the level. it's like 3 lives. We can add enemies, change that green dot into something more...
